CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS SUSPENDED AGAINST ASSISTED LIVING PATIENT
Criminal proceedings were suspended this morning against a man accused of slashing a woman in a Petaluma assisted living facility with a pruning saw Tuesday. Sonoma County Superior Court Judge Rene Chouteau ordered an exam to determine whether 53-year-old David J. Cooper is mentally competent to stand trial for assault. A hearing on the report is scheduled for Feb. 16. Cooper has been living in Sunrise Assisted Living in Petaluma since December because he lacks the capacity to take care of himself and has been placed under conservatorship, according to attorney Bill Adams of the Sonoma County Counsel's office. He is entitled to live in the least restrictive facility available, Adams said. Petaluma police said Cooper allegedly assaulted a female resident and an employee of the facility.
NorthePointe opens
ROSCOE - The public will get their first glimpse of the first phase of the NorthPointe health campus in Roscoe Saturday during a grand opening ceremony for NorthPointe Terrace. The grand opening will be held 1 - 4 p.m. at the new 24-unit assisted living center near the intersection of Willowbrook and Rockton roads. A ribbon cutting ceremony is at 1:30 p.m.The event will feature tours, refreshments, live music, prizes and a peek at what's to come at the new health campus in Roscoe being built by Beloit Memorial Hospital.All apartments at NorthPointe Terrace feature a kitchen with appliances, full bathroom, quiet bedroom, spacious living room, plus many social areas. Residents pay a monthly fee depending on the level of care requested. Residents can do their own cooking or enjoy chef-prepared meals.
Nursing home needs millions in improvements
A preliminary estimate puts the cost of the work at almost $5 million, including an estimated $2.2 million to replace plumbing in the main building. The estimate also includes almost $1 million to replace flooring and a new $325,000 fire alarm system for all the home s buildings. There s no way to know the extent or cost of work needed at the home without bringing in consultants to study the building, said George Meshew, director of county facilities management. "It's an old building," Meshew said. "It has a lot of needs." .
