Increase nursing home needs allowance

Amid the current and tumultuous debate concerning taxes and needs and services in New Jersey, those who live in the state's nursing homes and long-term health care facilities are all too often absent from discussion. Yet they should not be. Though mostly their care is paid for out of Social Security benefits and Medicaid services, each nursing home resident is also extended a so-called "personal needs allowance" (PNA) from the state. In New Jersey, that allowance remains a paltry sum.

Saw-Wielding Man Slashes Two At Petaluma Senior Center

A man wielding a tree-trimming saw was subdued with taser and bean-bag blasts early Tuesday after a violent spree at a Petaluma assisted care facility that left a female resident with serious head wounds and a staff member and a police officer with minor cuts.

Detective Matt Stapleton said police got a call at about 1:30 a.m. from the Sunrise Assisted Living facility reporting an altercation between a 53-year-old resident -- identified as David Cooper -- and a staff member.

When police arrived, they were greeted in the lobby by the woman bleeding badly from her head wounds.

Officers then confronted Cooper -- who was armed with a wood-handled tree trimming hand saw. However, he refused to cooperate and tossed a wheelchair down a stairway at the officers.

Plan for longer retirement

Seniors turning 69 have much more to think about than in years past when they move their money, as required at this age, out of their registered retirement savings plan (RRSP).

Much more time, that is.

"Our clients are getting older," says Robin Muir, of Hatch & Muir Investment in Victoria, B.C., a firm that specializes in advising retirees.

Still rooting at 103

That's Marion Wood's Super Bowl prediction, and you don't argue with a 103-year-old woman who saw Red Grange's six-touchdown day in person, holds a pretty strong claim on the distinction of oldest Bears fan and makes an awful lot of sense when she talks about Rex Grossman.
